Reading and Phonics

At Whitburn Village Primary School, we believe that reading is at the heart of learning and opens the door to success across the whole curriculum. Our ambition is for every child to become a confident, fluent and enthusiastic reader, equipped with the skills and vocabulary they need to succeed in school and beyond.

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised

At Whitburn Village Primary School, we use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised to teach children the skills they need to become confident and fluent readers. Little Wandle is a structured phonics programme that teaches children how letters and groups of letters represent different sounds and how to blend these sounds together to read words. Children take part in regular phonics lessons and carefully planned reading practice sessions, using books that are closely matched to the sounds they have been taught. This helps children experience success, build fluency and develop confidence in their reading. Children’s progress is regularly assessed so that any child who needs additional support can receive timely, targeted help to keep up with their peers.
