Whitburn Village Primary School

PE Curriculum

Intent

At Whitburn Village Primary School we intend that all children enjoy Physical Education and develop their physical literacy. Through our Physical Education curriculum, we will develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities co-operatively and competitively.  We aim to improve health and well-being, promote sustained active participation and a lifelong love of learning for each child to fulfil their potential throughout their life.

Implementation

PE is the planned, progressive learning that takes place in school curriculum timetabled time and which is delivered to all children. This involves both ‘learning to move’ and ‘moving to learn’. The context for learning is physical activity, with children developing a broad range of skills through:

  • Real PE – fundamental movement skills
  • Games
  • Gymnastics
  • Dance
  • Swimming and water safety
  • Outdoor and Adventurous.

Sport

Sport is the structured learning that takes place beyond the curriculum (i.e. in the extended curriculum). The school sport programme develops and broadens the foundation learning that takes place in physical education. It also forms a vital link with community sport and activity. The context for learning is physical activity, with children developing a broad range of skills through:

  • Gymnastics
  • Multi-skills
  • Athletics
  • Football
  • Netball

Physical Activity

Physical activity is a broad term referring to all bodily movement that uses energy and includes all forms of physical education, sports and play activities. In addition to physical education and sport our children develop a broad range of both physical and non-physical skills through:

  • Sport Leaders
  • Netball
  • Football
  • The use of playtime equipment
  • Using the trim trail
  • Physical classroom learning (dough disco, dancing times tables etc…)

At Whitburn we want the children to have as many opportunities to be active as possible and we encourage the children to have an active life style, helping to support the active 30/30 initiative.

Swimming

The children in years 3 and 4 will have swimming lessons at Sunderland Aquatics Centre. They will be taught basic swimming strokes to a distance of 25m and also learn how to perform a safe self-rescue. Any children who are not able to swim confidently to 25m by the end of year 4 will be provided with top up swimming lessons in year 6.

Impact

Assessment and Recording

Teachers and children assess against learning outcomes and success criteria.

A range of techniques can be used:

  • Observation
  • Discussion
  • Question and answer
  • Recording of activities to show progression

Assessments can inform teachers of what has been successful and future targets can be set for individuals.
